Course Overview
Physical Education (PE) for 4th and 5th graders focus on developing physical fitness, motor skills, teamwork, and a lifelong love for physical activity. The course emphasizes the importance of health, safety, and respect for others while participating in physical activities.
Objectives
By the end of the year, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate improved physical fitness in various areas, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and coordination.
- Understand and perform basic movements and skills in sports and physical activities.
- Work effectively in teams, showing good sportsmanship and communication.
- Apply basic health and fitness concepts, including the importance of regular physical activity, nutrition, and safety.
Units of Study
- Introduction to Physical Fitness (4 weeks)
- Activities: Fitness assessments, stretching routines, warm-up/cool-down exercises
- Skills: Cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility
- Key Concepts: Importance of physical fitness, how to measure and improve fitness levels
- Locomotor and Non-Locomotor Skills (4 weeks)
- Activities: Running, jumping, hopping, skipping, balance exercises
- Skills: Coordination, agility, balance
- Key Concepts: Types of movement, safety in movement
- Team Sports (10 weeks)
- Activities: Soccer, basketball, volleyball, flag football
- Skills: Passing, dribbling, shooting, teamwork

- Individual and Dual Sports (8 weeks)
- Activities: Tennis, badminton, track and field, gymnastics

- Rhythm and Dance (4 weeks)
- Activities: Simple dances, rhythmic activities, jump rope

- Activities: Discussions on nutrition, hygiene, mental health activities

Assessment and Grading
- Participation (50%): Active involvement in class activities, effort, and enthusiasm.
- Skill Development (30%): Improvement in physical skills and fitness levels.
- Knowledge Assessments (10%): Quizzes on rules, strategies, and health concepts.
- Sportsmanship and Teamwork (10%): Cooperation with peers, following rules, displaying good sportsmanship.
Class Expectations
- Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial. Absences must be excused, and make-up work will be assigned.
- Clothing: Students should wear appropriate athletic clothing and footwear.
- Behavior: Respect for classmates, equipment, and instructors is mandatory. Follow all safety guidelines.
